Community Invited to Meeting on Proposed Hale Makua Workforce Housing Project

Central Maui residents and essential workers are invited to participate in an upcoming community meeting regarding the proposed Hale Makua Workforce Housing project in Kahului.

Organized by Hale Makua Health Services in partnership with Alakaʻi Development, the informational session takes place on Wednesday, September 9, providing local community members, healthcare workers, and neighbors an opportunity to review preliminary site concepts, ask questions, and share public input.

Project Overview: Housing Maui’s Essential Workforce

The proposed 100-unit workforce rental housing community is part of Hale Makua's broader vision to pair accessible residential housing with its upcoming specialty healthcare "CarePlex" development in Kahului.

Key highlights of the proposed residential development include:

  • Targeted Workforce Preference: Rental units are planned specifically for entry-level healthcare professionals, local educators, and essential workforce personnel.
  • Displaced Family Support: Priority housing availability is designated for local families displaced by the 2023 Maui wildfires.
  • Integrated CarePlex Campus: The residential units will sit adjacent to Hale Makua's planned rehabilitation and specialty care facility, creating a connected, walkable environment near healthcare and educational hubs.
"When our teachers, nurses, and essential workers can live in the communities they serve, our entire island benefits," noted community partners during the project's initial unveiling. "This development directly targets the root challenges driving our island's critical workforce and housing shortages."

Community Meeting Details

  • Date: Wednesday, September 9
  • Purpose: Project presentation, site plan walkthrough, Q&A session, and public feedback collection.
  • Hosts: Hale Makua Health Services & Alakaʻi Development.

Community participation plays a vital role in refining site plans, traffic considerations, and neighborhood integration before formal land use applications move forward to County planning commissions.

Strengthening Our Local Housing Pipeline

Expanding workforce housing options near key employer centers like Central Maui’s medical and civic districts helps ensure local families remain rooted on island. Projects like the Hale Makua development demonstrate how local non-profits and private developers can collaborate to provide long-term housing solutions for our essential workforce.
