Funding the Future Affordable Housing Grants Offered to Hawaii Nonprofits
Hawaii nonprofits working tirelessly to support local families in need of affordable housing have a major new funding opportunity. The Nareit Foundation has officially opened applications for its latest round of affordable housing grants, aimed at strengthening community stability across the islands.
Administered through the Nareit Hawaii Community Giving Initiative, these grants are funded by donations from Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) operating in Hawaii. Since the initiative launched in November 2018, the foundation has awarded more than 2.8 million dollars to support affordable housing projects statewide.
Priority Given to Shovel Ready Projects
The Nareit Foundation is looking to fund impactful, tangible housing solutions rather than the early stages of project development.
- The Criteria: Applicants must be registered nonprofits implementing affordable housing projects intended for sale or rent in Hawaii.
- Shovel Ready Focus: Organizations with shovel-ready projects—meaning planning is complete and construction or implementation is ready to begin—will receive priority consideration.
- Restrictions: It is important to note that grant funds are not intended for the initial planning or design phases of a project.
Gladys Quinto Marrone, Executive Director of Nareit Hawaii, highlighted the importance of the program, stating:
"Expanding the availability of quality affordable housing is one of Hawaii's top priorities and it's an honor to support these dedicated nonprofits with grants as they work to provide a safe and secure home for families raising children and residents seeking a better life."
Understanding the Role of REITs in Hawaii
Funding for these grants comes directly from REITs, which are long-term property holders in the islands. Beyond charitable giving, REITs play an active role in local real estate by owning, renovating, and managing affordable housing projects, medical office buildings, commercial spaces, and shopping centers that support small businesses and residents statewide.
Important Deadlines and How to Apply
Nonprofits interested in applying must complete the official grant application form, which is accessible through the Nareit Hawaii website.
- Application Deadline: Friday, June 19, 2026, at 5 p.m.
- Where to Apply: Visit the How to Apply section at www.nareithawaii.com.
- Award Timing: Selected nonprofits will be presented with their grants later this year.
