Things You Didn't Know About The Valley Isle

1.The world’s first ever kiteboarding competition was held on Maui in 1998.  Kiteboarding has since become a huge international sport and this year was introduced into the Rio Olympics.

2. The famous 52 mile long Hana Highway was built by convicts. The dangerous task of constructing this highway of 56 bridges and tons of switchbacks was pawned off to convicted felons at the then Keanae prison camp.

3. La Perouse Bay is the result of Haleakala Volcano’s last eruption making it the youngest part of the island.  Haleakala is a dormant volcano that could potentially erupt once again.

4. Lahaina Was once the state capital.  It was also a major whaling port at that time.

5. Lahainaluna high school is the oldest school in the nation West of the Rockies.

6. Maui is home to celebrities such as Mick Fleetwood, Oprah, Owen Wilson and Willie Nelson.
