Hawaii State Holidays

Today is Price Kuhio Day!

Prince Kuhio Day is a Hawaii state Holiday celebrating the life of Price Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole, one of Hawaii’s best known leaders in history.

Prince Kuhio was influential in the Royalist uprising against the overthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom.  Later he became a political figure knowing that he could do more to help the Hawaiian people by cooperating with the industrialists who overthrew the kingdom.

Prince Kuhio Day became a Hawaii state holiday in 1949 to honor his life and the many political changes he made benefiting the Hawaiian people.  Government offices, schools and many local businesses are closed each year on March 26 in his honor.

Prince Kuhio is not the only Hawaiian historical figure who has his own state holiday.  King Kamehameha Day is celebrated each year on June 11th.  Another holiday only observed in Hawaii is Statehood Day celebrated on August 21.

Other states throughout the Nation have their own special holidays as well, celebrating historical leaders and significant dates.  Alaska Celebrates, Alaska Day, marking the day they became a part of the United States.  Utah celebrates, Pioneer Day, the day Mormon pioneers settled in the Salt Lake Valley.

States can declare their own state holidays, where state employees will get the day off.  They can also choose whether or not to observe federal holidays.  Martin Luther King Day is not observed in some Southern States.
