Market Update

Maui visitor numbers have slowed from the record-breaking numbers we saw at the beginning of 2018.  For September visitor spending was up but only slightly by .4% to $334 million, making it only the second month in which monthly visitor spending was below $400 million. 

Both August and September experienced hurricane scares which drew National media attention and likely caused lower monthly visitor spending than what we've been seeing for most the year.  Ultimately both Hurricanes Lane and Olivia were downgraded to tropical storms.  Olivia made landfall on Maui on September 12th and caused some flood damage to the Northwest part of the island. 

Despite Olivia, visitor arrivals were up 5.9% in September compared to September 2017.  For the same month the per day visitor spending dropped 8.9% to $206/ day.  The Hawaii Tourism Authority reported increases in visitors from Canada by 14%, Japan by 11%, East Coast by 6.5% and West Coast visitors increased by 3%.
