COVID-19 has changed many aspects of our day to day lives and when this pandemic is in the rearview mirror one area we are not likely to see a return to normalcy is in the traditional office job. When the bulk of state lock downs happened in March and April, companies that otherwise would never have considered having their employees work from home were forced to adapt to the situation and create a virtual environment where their teams could still produce exceptional work. What was supposed to be a temporary measure has now lasted for the better part of 2020, with some companies making the permanent switch to having an entirely remote team.

With the freedom that comes from working remotely, many employees are taking a hard look at their home office set up, and where they would like that office to be located now that they can live and work from anywhere. At the top of the list for many is Hawaii, with prominent CEO’s, wealthy business leaders and digital nomads moving here during the pandemic. With the tourism industry devastated by COVID-19, Hawaii business leaders see this as an opportunity to attract professionals that can change the business and technology landscape in Hawaii and diversify revenue flowing into the state.

One great example of this effort is the Movers & Shakas program which is an initiative designed to bring talented young professionals to Hawaii so they can contribute their skills, rebuild the economy and experience the unparalleled lifestyle found here. Another area where we are seeing the freedom of remote work in action is with former Hawaii residents who are moving back to the islands while still working for companies based on the mainland. Many people leave family and friends in Hawaii for the opportunity and affordability of the mainland, but being able to work from home allows them to move back without risking their jobs and experience the best of both worlds.
