Market Update

"Island Ranching" has been selected as the theme for the Department of Land and Natural Resource's 2018 calendar.  DLNR representatives said that they selected this because of its impactful role in the shaping of Hawaii's history.  The popular calendar has been in production for 30 years and strives to showcase Hawaii's rich cultural history. 

Ranching in the Islands can be dated back to 1793 when Captain Vancouver introduced cattle to the Big Island.  A Kapu (taboo) was placed on cattle for 10 years stating that no one could hunt or kill them and by the 1820's there were nearly 30,000 cattle in Hawaii.  

Domesticated animals such as goats, sheep and horses in 1803 followed and by 1929 there were 41 primary cattle ranches throughout the state including 7 on Maui.  By the late 20th century ranching saw a great decline due to Hawaii's changing economy.  Most existing ranches that have survived and are still operating today have diversified by offering tours, ziplines, off-roading adventures or locations for movies.  

The calendar will be distributed statewide.

P.S. - The Lahaina Sugar Cane train is back with The Holiday Express, operating now through Christmas Day.  Two rides are available nightly at 6:30 and 8:00 PM aboard the festively decorated train.  The train departs from Pu'ukoli'i station in Kaanaapali and Santa will be aboard.
