Market Update

The number of new cases of COVID-19 in Hawaii has dropped dramatically over the last two weeks, with 1 or 0 cases being reported each day statewide. Of those who were sick in the initial wave, 93% have fully recovered. While COVID-19 isn’t going away, these are encouraging signs that have prompted Governor Ige to begin opening up the economy in Phase 2 of his “Roadmap to Recovery and Resilience”.

What Governor Ige initially referred to as the Safer At Home order will now be known as the Act With Care order and signifies the reopening of medium risk, non-essential businesses as soon as June 1st. To watch the entirety of Governor Ige’s speech, click here. The 14-day mandatory quarantine for out of state arrivals will continue through the end of June, as well as the eviction moratorium which protects Maui residents from being foreclosed on.

P.S. Memorial Day on Maui is usually marked by huge celebrations of the lives of veterans at several memorial parks across the island. Last year, Blue Hawaiian Helicopters released thousands of rose petals over the graves of veterans in Makawao Veteran’s Cemetery to a live musical performance by the King Kekaulike High School Band. Sadly this year, because of the current pandemic, all large celebrations have been canceled. Celebrations of veterans will likely take place in small family gatherings, on social media, and on Zoom.

The Smith Team would also like to extend their sincere condolences to the family of Willie K, who sadly passed away last night at the age of 59. Willie K was a musical icon and a colorful local legend. He will surely be missed by the entire community.
