Market Update
Under the direction of architect George Rixey a very unique home in Kihei began construction last week. This will be the first home in the state of Hawaii to be constructed using hemp based materials.
The newly developed product, hempcrete, has many advantages over traditional building materials. Aside from having excellent insulating properties it is mold resistant, fire resistant, hydrophobic and termites don't want to eat it.
Hempcrete is made from drying out large hemp stalks and pulverizing them, then mixing with lime and water to form a concrete-like solution. The hemp being used in this monumental project was imported but maybe industrial hemp will be Hawaii's next cash crop. State legislature has already approved experimental agriculture of hemp.
