Market Update

Funding for a new site specific wave forecast system for West Maui will give the public and community short term notifications for possible large wave, flooding and shoreline run-up events.  This new forecast tool will also assist in long term planning for the county and developers along the West Maui coastline. 

The West Maui coastline is very vulnerable to the impacts of rising sea levels and large wave run-ups.  The recent King Tides along with high sea levels caused cars driving along Honoapiilani Highway to get splashed and lanais of ground floor oceanfront buildings to get flooded. A monk seal even found its way on to the shoulder of the highway. 

The chronic shoreline erosion has some West Maui Homeowners Associations seeking county permits for costly projects that will prevent these buildings from falling into the ocean.  Currently some of this condominium projects have put up sand bag barriers but this is a short term solution. 


The University of Hawaii Ocean Observing Project received a $500K federal grant for the wave run-up forecast tool.  The project will begin in October and use data from coastline pressure gauges along with off-shore buoys to provide the public with 6 days' notice of shoreline run-up events.
