Market Update

Lo'ihi, the island forming 24 miles Southeast of the Ka'u district on the Big Island has shown increased earthquake activity this month.  As tracked by the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory this month alone as of June 22 there were 51 located earthquakes in the Lo'ihi region.  Since 2015 on average there is 1 located earthquake a month near Lo'ihi but 2017 had shown an uptick in seismic activity. 

Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientists have known of the active volcano Lo'ihi since 1952.  This month's sudden earthquake swarm alone cannot confirm that Lo'ihi is currently erupting but is a pretty good indicator.  Since there are not currently any monitoring instruments in the Lo'ihi region scientists would need to go and investigate further to confirm a submarine eruption.  The last confirmed eruption of Lo'ihi was in 1996. 

Since the top of Lo'ihi is still 1 kilometer underwater the USGS regards it as a very low threat volcano and there are no immediate plans for putting tracking equipment in the area.  Kilauea volcano continues to erupt but poses no immediate threat to nearby communities.
