Market Update

Home ownership rates are at the lowest level they've been in more than 50 years.  The 2016 home ownership rate was an average of 63.4% of the population, 5.8% below the pre-recession peak.  Home ownership plays a critical role in the National economy as it helps build personal wealth and strengthen communities. 

​The cause of the plunge in home ownership is of course in part due to the 9.4 million homes lost to foreclosure and short sales between 2007 - 2015.  Other factors that have contributed are tight mortgage credits, demographic changes and job losses.  Currently the median household income still remains below pre-recession numbers especially for households under the age of 44. 

Economists are optimistic that home ownership rates will stabilize and improve in the near to medium future.  We are seeing increased job opportunities which will accelerate household income growth.  Financial security will help families feel comfortable in growing, having children and create a demand for larger housing units. Mortgage availability is improving as well.
