Market Update

Statistics released by the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations show that Maui County's jobless rate is less than half the national average at only 1.9%.  The National jobless rate is 4.1%.  

Maui County showed improvement in decreasing joblessness from March 2017 when the jobless rate was 2.7%.  These rates do not account for seasonal fluctuations in employment rates due to summer vacations or the holiday season.  

Molokai has the highest unemployment rate in the state at 3.8%, though they did show improvement from 2017 when it was 5.1%.  Lanai's jobless rate is 2.7%.  The county of Kauai has the lowest unemployment rate in the state at 1.8%.

Statewide the major industries to see job gains were hospitality with an increase of 600 jobs, utilites increased by 500 jobs and Health showed an increase of 100 jobs.  The manufacturing industry experienced 100 job losses  and government experienced 500 job lossess.  The most job losses were in the construction industry.

P.S. - 30 Years ago, April 28, 1988, Aloha Airlines flight 243 had it's roof ripped off mid-air and the pilot successfully executed an emergency landing in Kahului on an inter-island flight from Hilo to Honolulu.  Today those who were aboard share their memories of that fateful day with the Maui News.
