Market Update

Wherever you are in the United States, we all celebrate New Year's Day on January 1st and Independence Day on July 4th each year.  In Hawaii, we also have some traditional Hawaiian holidays that are observed.  During these days, the government offices, schools, and many of the businesses are closed.  The city transportation system will also run on a holiday schedule.

On March 26th of each year, we celebrate Prince Kuhio Day in remembrance of Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole.  Born in 1871, Prince Kuhio was Queen Liliuokalani's (last monarch of Hawaii) cousin and an heir to the throne of the Kingdom of Hawaii.  He was best remembered in having Congress pass the 1920 Hawaiian Homes Commission Act to provide homesteads for Native Hawaiians.  Approximately 200,000 acres were set aside for people of Hawaiian ancestry.

On June 11th of each year, we celebrate King Kamehameha Day in remembrance of Kamehameha the Great.  He was the monarch who first established the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1810.  This kingdom comprised of Ni'ihau, Kaua'i, Oahu, Moloka'i, Lana'i, Kaho'olawe, Maui, and Hawai'i.  King Kamehameha reigned from 1782 to 1819.

The third Friday of August each year, we celebrate the anniversary of Hawaii's statehood known as Statehood Day.  Hawaii became the 50th state in the United States on August 21, 1959.  In 2014, we will be celebrating Statehood Day on Friday, August 15th.
