Market Update

On June 24th, Governor David Ige announced that Hawaii will be instituting a pre-travel testing option for those visitors who do not want to undergo a 14-day quarantine. The testing option will be rolled out on August 1st, and Governor Ige is hopeful this will prompt a surge in trans-pacific travel that will begin to revitalize the Hawaiian economy while keeping the community safe.

It’s been months since the mandatory 14-day quarantine was first implemented, which caused a sharp travel decline that has already forced many people to move off-island, and many businesses to permanently close their doors. Since then, Hawaii residents have been waiting for a new travel solution to come from the Governor’s office. In a press conference speaking about what that new pre-travel testing would look like, Governor Ige said this, “We’ve been working diligently to develop a multi-layered testing and screening process that would allow us to invite travelers back to the islands”.


State economic experts feel optimistic that tourism will begin to significantly pick up towards the end of July and praised Governor Ige for giving travelers an option that didn’t involve a 14-day quarantine. We, like everyone else, remain hopeful that as tourists begin to return to the islands, Maui’s economy will begin to rapidly recover.
