Market Update

In a document called a community plan, the residents of one of several regions on the island are able to put together their goals for the social, environmental, and economic growth for the next 20 years. West Maui has just completed its community plan, which hasn’t been updated since 1996. The community plan serves as a roadmap for the desired growth in an area, from housing to business and agriculture.

1-west-maui-map-542x840 6The West Maui Community Plan Advisory Committee, which is responsible for updating the community plan just completed its review and revision process in May after 10 months of deliberation. From the draft they released to the public, it’s clear that open space and parks are a big priority over the next two decades with 500 more acres being designated for outdoor recreation space. The plan also limits the number of large estates and affordable housing projects that can be built.

From here, the plan will be sent to the Maui Planning Commission, which will begin to review the draft later this month. The West Maui Community Plan Advisory Committee Chairwoman Kai Nishiki had this to say when asked about her thoughts on the plan, “We focused on the quality of life for residents and needs of our community and let that guide our actions.”
