Market Update

Tonight the moon above Maui brings a triple threat, super moon, blue moon and a total lunar eclipse all rolled into a remarkable spectacle. This special celestial mix hasn't occurred in 150 years and won't happen again until 2037.  

Set your alarms to wake up just before 2:51 am and you'll have the opportunity to watch this special total eclipse of a super moon. This special occurrence is being called a "Blue Moon total lunar eclipse" or a "Super Blue Blood Moon."

A blue moon is when there is more than one full moon in a calendar month, January 1st, 2018 was also a full moon.  A Super moon is when the moon is closer to the Earth, making it appear much larger and brighter. 

A lunar eclipse is when the moon appears to be darkened as it passes the Earth's shadow.  During a total lunar eclipse, the moon will also appear a reddish color as it is illuminated by sunlight refracted by the Earth's atmosphere which is why a lunar eclipse is also referted to as a "blood" moon.  

This special moon will only be visible from North America, Asia, the Pacific and Oceania.  Hawaii will have a great view!

P.S. - Volunteers spotted 172 whales from 46 sites statewide last Saturday as part of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary Ocean Count.  They found that most whales are sighted between 10:30 and 10:45 am.
