Market Update

Last week Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co. an Alexander and Baldwin Company announced it will be transitioning it's 36,000 acres on Maui out of the sugar industry.  The close of HC&S marks the end of Hawaii's 180 year long sugar era.

A&B representatives stated that they plan to continue to use their land for diversified agricultural usage.  Representatives Kaniela Ing of South Maui and Cynthia Thielen of Kailua have put together a bipartisan proposal to transition the Maui's cornerstone crop to industrial hemp.

The University of Hawaii conducted a research study to determine if industrial hemp would be a viable crop in our state.  The results showed subtropical fiber hemp grew very well and could potentially be quite profitable yielding 27-31 tons of dry stalk per year.  Of course there are still the politics to work out before hemp replaces sugar here on Maui.
