Market Update

The U.S. geological Survey has updated the threat assessment of an eruption at Haleakala crater to a moderate threat.  The mountain is predicted to erupt every 200-500 years. 

The most likely site for the next eruption will be along the Southwest rift zone, a line of vents that descend down to La Perouse.  Prior to an eruption we can expect to experience a large number of micro-earthquakes as magma breaks rocks and moves to the surface.  Scientists believe the youngest lava flow occurred in the Southwest rift zone sometime between 1420 and 1820.  


The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory officials confirm with the assessment that Haleakala will become active once again though there are no signs suggesting that it will be anytime soon.  Seismically Haleakala is quiet, showing no signs of unrest such as earthquakes or ground deformation.  They have suggested there is a need for lava flow hazard zones on East Maui.  

Don't worry though, when Haleakala erupts again it is anticipated to be smaller in volume and explosive than Kilauea or Mauna Loa.
