Market Update

There can certainly be no dispute that we are living in strange times. The Covid-19 Pandemic, widespread unemployment, police brutality followed by rioting, and yet the stock market is almost back to new highs and real estate prices are not falling.

Of course, the reaction from both the stock market and the real estate market may not be that surprising given the massive stimulus from the government, and pent up demand for housing while the inventories are shrinking.

Here in Hawaii, we have so far been immune to the violence we have all witnessed across the country. Yesterday and today there were a small group of people protesting peacefully here on Maui. What we have not been immune to though is the effect on our economy which is especially true on Maui which is about 70% dependent on tourism.

The tourism market has really dried up since the 14 Day Quarantine rule has been in effect. Governor Ige announced a few days ago that he intends to extend that quarantine to visitors coming to our Islands past the June 30th deadline previously in effect. He has not said how long he will extend it.

Maui is slowly getting back to some semblance of normalcy with most retail stores, restaurants, and services available for business. My gym is still closed as well as theatres. Looking forward to being able to eat inside a restaurant again while still following the rules the county has set forth with regards to Covid-19.

I am reminded of the saying, this too shall pass. The big question is how long it will take, and what will the real estate market and our economy look like in a year or two from now. One interesting article that gives a cause for concern is the possible exodus of a significant segment of the population from Maui to the mainland. Read more on what UH economists are predicting by 2022.

We certainly hope that some of these dire predictions prove to be wrong. Time will tell. Stay well and be safe.
