Market Update

The governor recently approved new rabies quarantine rules.  The waiting period has been shortened for pet owners following the "5 Day or Less Rabies Quarantine Program."  This program allows pets to bypass physical quarantine in Hawaii if they follow a strict protocol of required vaccinations and blood testing prior to their arrival in the state. 

Under this program the previous rabies rules required pets to wait a minimum of 120 days after a successful rabies antibody blood test and 90 days after receiving their most recent rabies vaccination.  Under the new rule pets will only have to wait 30 days after a successful blood test and rabies vaccination.  

Last year more than 16,500 dogs and cats entered Hawaii, 90% completed the pre-arrival requirements and were not held in quarantine longer than 5 days upon arriving to Honolulu international airport.  Pets flying directly into neighbor island airports are subject to an additional $165 fee. 

Hawaii is the only rabies free state in the country.  Keeping rabies and other tick-borne diseases out of Hawaii is vital to animal, human and environmental health.  After much research the Board of Agriculture approved the new rules and they are already in effect.

P.S. - Maui County luxury hotels outperform the rest of the state.  The Hawaii Tourism Authority reported average daily rates of $674.89 for luxury Maui hotel rooms in July.  By region, Wailea average daily hotel rates climbed above the rest, confirming it's high-end luxury status.
