Market Update

Olinda Organic Farms won the prestigious top coffee award last week Friday at the 10th annual Seed to Cup Coffee Festival held at the Maui Tropical Plantation.  Maui made history this year by taking more top 10 places than any other district.  The Big Island has dominated the festival since it's inception 10 years ago with their world famous Kona coffee.

Hawaii is the only state in the U.S. to grow commercial coffee.  Thanks to our verdant, lush landscape there are 6,000 acres under cultivation producing 7-8 million pounds of coffee annually.  Though coffee production on the Big Island is at a much larger scale Maui is catching up.  There are currently 50 commercial coffee farms on Maui cultivating 500 acres mainly in Kaanapali, Hana and on the slopes of Haleakala. 

The major challenges Maui coffee growers face are the coffee berry borer and the high cost of real estate.  The coffee berry borer is a beetle that bores into the coffee cherries and lays eggs that feed on the bean and reduce the yield and the quality of the coffee.  Maui coffee growers meet often to discuss preventative measures to take against the beetle and to prevent the spread of it when discovered.  

Coffee growers are also concerned about the high cost of real estate on the island preventing them from expanding their farm operations.  They hope that Act 116, signed in the law earlier this month will assist coffee plantations with expanding their agricultural practices on to the now fallow sugar cane lands.

P.S. - Hawaiian Airlines will be adding 3 new direct flights from the West Coast to the neighbor islands in 2018.  A direct flight from Portland to Maui will begin on January, 18th.  They will also be adding a direct flight from Oakland to Kauai and Los Angeles to Kona.
