Customer Listing Synopsis

Market Update

A bill that is supposed to bring uniformity and fairness to Maui county farmland/Agricultural land tax assessments is being discussed.  The proposed bill is aimed at catching "gentlemen farmers" or property owners who "farm" solely for the benefit of the tax breaks. 

Though the bill is aimed at catching gentlemen farmers it was met by much opposition from many of the prominent farmers and Agricultural businesses in the community including the Maui County Farm Bureau itself.  Farmers feel that the bill will result in higher taxes for them as well and potentially put them out of business.  

After a lengthy debate earlier this week, as of now the committee is taking no action.  They said they will continue to redraft the bill after annual budget deliberations are made in early Summer.

P.S. - Oahu is now joining the rest of the state to ban plastic bags at grocery and retail stores.  The plastic bag ban for the island of Oahu will take effect July 1, 2015.
