Market Update

The number of visitors to Maui last year was a record high.  According to the Hawaii Tourism Authority 2.6 million visitors traveled to Maui in 2016, that is 3.9% higher than 2015.  Visitor spending was also a record high at $4.5 billion, 8.1% higher than the previous year.

​70% of people who traveled to Maui were repeat visitors which shows that their experiences here make them want to return year after year.  Virgin Airlines added new direct flights to Maui last year which contributed to the number of airline seats to Maui increasing by 2.8%.

​Last month visitors from the East coast increased by 8.9% and visitors from the West coast increased by 5.2%.  Visitor numbers from Japan and Canada have both declined.

​Statewide, the Hawaii Tourism Authority reported 8.9 million visitors to Hawaii last year and a total spending of $15.6 billion.  This is the fifth straight year of record growth and forecasts show continued growth.

​With the new 200 room Marriott Residence Inn in Wailea opening up last year and the 390 room Westin Nanea Ocean Villas in Kaanapali to open soon hotel-wise Maui can keep up with this sustained growth.  The island is struggling to keep up as far as infrastructure as we continue to see increases in traffic island-wide especially along the Pali.
