Market Update


One of the perks of living on Maui is enjoying the delicious local fruits and vegetables.  My husband’s cousin from Oregon moved into our cottage a week ago and she was amazed with the number of ripe avocados falling from the tree in her backyard.  It is avocado season and we are enjoying the 4 different varieties of avocado that we grow on our property.  If you own a property on Maui, I would encourage you to grow your own fruit and vegetables.  If you are just visiting, there are a number of farmer’s markets and grocery stores that you could go to get some fresh local fruit and produce.

One of my favorite farmer’s markets to go to is the Upcountry Farmer’s Market located in the parking lot next to the Long’s Drug Store in the Kulamalu Town Center.  The address is 55 Kiopaa Street, Pukalani.  They are open every Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon.  Besides buying the local fruits and vegetables, you can also pick up some fresh fish from the local fishermen there.  http://www.upcountryfarmersmarket.com/index.html

There is even a farmer’s market in our largest shopping center, the Queen Kaahumanu Center located on 275 W Kaahumanu Avenue in Kahului.  The local vendors are there every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8 to 4 p.m. in the center of the mall.  Just last week I did some shopping at Macy’s and then bought some strawberry papayas and Kula sweet onions before leaving the mall.
 
You could also go to the Maui Swap Meet on Saturdays from 7 to 1 p.m.  This is Maui’s largest outdoor market where you can buy fresh produce and souvenirs.  It is located in the parking lot of the University of Hawaii – Maui College off of Kaahumanu Avenue in Kahului.  The admission fee is only $0.50.  http://www.mauiexposition.com/MAUISWAPMEET.html

There are a number of other venues that you could get our fresh local produce, including the nationwide giant, Costco and my favorite local grocery store, Mana Foods in Paia.  If you are in the Haiku area, you will probably drive past some fruit stands on your way to Hana.

P.S. - I would recommend trying our island papayas, especially the strawberry papayas because they are a little sweeter.  Just remember to remove the black seeds from the center of papaya before eating it.
