Market Update

Below is a brief overview of health care options on Maui.  If you have specific questions or concerns, please feel free to ask.
 

Maui has only one hospital, Maui Memorial Medical Center (MMMC). It was founded in 1952 to serve all residents and visitors on Maui.  There are also many outpatient clinics, such as Kaiser Permanente with centers in Kihei, Kahului, Wailuku, and Lahaina where minor surgeries and medical procedures are routinely done. Today, MMMC employs over 1,400 employees and boasts over 200 attending physicians.
 
Several years ago, MMMC, which is a state run hospital, was embroiled in a major battle to block a new hospital from being built in Lahaina.  New hospitals have to be approved at the State level, and MMMC was opposed as they saw this diminishing their ability to provide the best quality service.
 
In their defense, having the latest technological devices can be extremely costly, and having more than one hospital on the Island might have resulted in two hospitals both losing money.  My own personal opinion, however, is that competition is good and would have only enhanced the quality of services, but for the time being the opponents of a new hospital did prevail.
 
From everything I’ve read and personally experienced, MMMC generally provides high quality medical services in almost all areas.  In certain cases, such as Open Heart Surgery and Neo-Natal care, patients are sent to Oahu for treatment. 
 

If you look at longevity statistics, you’ll find that Hawaii has the most long lived citizens in the country. Some of that is undoubtedly due to the wonderful relaxed lifestyle in the Islands with its clean air, water, and abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables. Maui no ka ‘oi.
