Market Update

The main component for the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) is to be delivered to Science City at the summit of Haleakala tonight via a police escorted convoy.  Despite resistance the exterior dome for the telescope is already completed.  When the telescope opens up in 2019 it will be the largest and most powerful solar telescope on Earth.      

A native Hawaiian protest group, Kako'o Haleakala, is planning a demonstration this evening blocking the convoy's route to the summit.  Since its inception there has been opposition against the telescope.  Hawaiian culture celebrates Haleakala as profound, spirtiual land, a place to honor ancestors and practice spiritual traditions.  

Solar astronomers selected Haleakala as the site for their new $344 million telescope due to low amounts of dust in the air and low air turbulence.  On the Big Island, on the top of Mauna Kea plans to build a Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) were delayed.  Due to many protests and strong opposition the construction of the telescope is now tied up in court.  

In Hawaiian, Haleakala means "House of the Sun."  Though it is a vantage point for science it is also a holy ground.
