Market Update

2017 is anticipated to be a recording breaking year on Maui in terms of visitor arrivals and total visitor spending.  November numbers released by the Hawaii Tourism Authority were up substantially and the numbers for December, a typically busy month are still being calculated. 

Visitor arrivals were up by 9.3% in November to 215,266 visitors for the month and up 3.7% for the first 11 months of the year to over 2.4 million.  In November 2017 visitors spent 2.7% more than in November 2016 and stayed on island 5.8% longer.  Average daily spending was actually down 2.9% in November to an average of $205/ day but for the year thus far average daily spending was up by 1.5% to $215/ day.  

Most visitors to Maui last year were from the West Coast of the United States and Canada.  Arrivals from the West Coast in November 2017 increased by 9.1% over November 2016.  Arrivals from Canada increased by 18.4% over the same month the previous year. 

Statewide visitor arrivals were up 7.3% in November to 748,303 visitors total, although for the year arrivals were down 4.9% to 8.5 million.  The total number of airline seat capacity to the state increased by 5% to 964,993 in November 2017.

P.S. - The State Department of Health will be holding a cesspool compliance meeting this evening at 6 PM at Eddie Tam Memorial Center in Makawao.  Makawao is one of the 2 highest priority areas in the state for cesspool conversion based on drinking water tests performed by the Health Department.  Representatives from the State Department of Health will be there answering questions and providing information.
