Market Update

Hotel and vacation rental occupancy continues to soar throughout the State of Hawaii, but Maui is leading the way because of its ample supply of vacation rentals. According to reports done by the Hawaii Tourism Authority, Maui County has a supply of 323,000 units which is a 29% percent increase from this same time a year ago. Across the island occupancy is sitting at 79%, meaning that at any one time 255,000 units are occupied by tourists. The average daily rate for a vacation rental is $224 per night, although the prices at most of the hotels are much higher.

The highest average daily rate by region was on Maui’s west side, specifically in the Lahaina, Kaanapali and Kapalua areas. The average nightly rate there was $251, which is over 13% higher than this same time last year. The highest average occupancy by region goes to Wailea, where vacation rentals saw an occupancy rate of 73.7% which is 7% higher than in 2018. P.S. Even though shipping items to and from the mainland has become easier and faster in the last few years, the US Postal Service and other package carriers do have a tendency to get backed up during the holiday season. According to a statement released by the US Postal Service, you should aim to have your packages in the mail no later than December 19th if you intend to use standard shipping.
