Important Update: New Water Demand Standards for Maui County
Aloha!
Starting January 1, 2026, the County of Maui Department of Water Supply will implement a new method for projecting water demand and sizing water meters, as required by Ordinance 5759. The update replaces the fixture-based Hunter Curve Method with a daily water-use model that better reflects actual demand and supports long-term water management.
Key Points:

Water demand will be measured using Equivalent Single Dwellings (ESDs) based on daily water use.

One ESD equals 300 gallons per day, with an additional 0.5 ESD allocated for outdoor use.

The new method applies to building permit and water-use applications submitted on or after January 1, 2026.
-
Applications submitted on or before December 31, 2025, will continue under the current method.
