Market Update

Many people are aware of vog, the air pollution resulting from sulfur dioxide and other gases emitted by a volcano.  The word vog is a combination of "volcanic fog." 

The newest air pollutant, now being referred to as "laze," a combination of the words "lava haze" is a result of lava from Kilauea entering the ocean.  The hazardous laze is a mix of hydrochloric acid and steam with fine glass particles created when the lava mixes with ocean water. 


Currently neither vog nor laze pose any threat to Maui's air quality as normal tradewinds continue.  The Department of Health has announced several recommendations in the event of vog conditions. 

Reduce outdoor activities that require heavy breathing.  Stay indoors and close windows, if your running an air conditioner set it to recirculate air. Keep any daily prescribed medications readily available.  It is also recommended to avoid smoking, drink lots of water and develop a family emergency plan.
