Market Update

Maui is moving in the direction to become the Silicon Valley of the Pacific.  We are certainly a far cry from being such a dominant force in the High Tech arena, but the seeds have been sown so that down the road we will be a more major player.
 
The Maui Research and Technology Center (MRTC) is a technology center and business incubator strategically located in Kihei, Maui, within the 415-acre Maui Research & Technology Park. Dedicated to supporting technology-oriented businesses, MRTC brings together a diversity of enterprises from industry niches as varied as astronomy and biotechnology. MRTC is home to startups, technology companies phasing in Maui operations, and compelling federal technology projects.
 
 A new high tech project that is taking hold on Maui is the “Maui Smart Grid Project”, designed to help people better manage their energy consumption.  There are many people who have serious concerns about smart meters.  Read more about the controversy.
 
Being one of the surfing and windsurfing capitals of the world, it is not surprising that one company has led the way in revolutionary new designs of surfboards.  Hi-Tech Maui has been on the leading edge of surfboard designs for over 30 years.
 
According to Lynn Gordon Butterfield, COO of the Wayne Brown Institute, Enormous potential exists for the high technology industry in Maui due to the intellectually stimulating atmosphere created by Maui's beauty and lifestyle, Hawaii's vast and growing high-technology support infrastructure, and the state's geographic position, making it a natural portal between the US and Asian high technology markets.”
 
Maui County has been instrumental in encouraging the growth of high technology through its partnership with Maui Economic Development Board (MEDB).  Founded in 1982, MEDB’s mission has been to diversify the economy and assisting in the development of the technology sector has been a key strategy in this effort.
 
The future looks very bright for Maui as the economy slowly transitions out of one that was based almost entirely on tourism and agriculture to one that is increasingly making headways in the world of high technology.
