Market Update

Maui’s Mayor Michael Victorino announced that Transient Vacation Rentals, or TVR’s which up to this point have been completely shut down due to COVID-19 will be allowed to continue operating on Tuesday, June 16th. There is a big catch for vacation rental operators, however, because they can only rent their unit to local residents, or interisland travelers that are no longer subject to the 14-day quarantine.

This is a huge win for vacation rental operators, who have up to this point been forced to let their units sit vacant since March. Now at least they can rent to guests who may be traveling from another island to Maui for a vacation or to see family. Unfortunately for out-of-state travelers, the 14-day mandatory quarantine will remain in effect until July 31st. Anyone flying in from the mainland or an international destination will have to complete their 14-day quarantine inside a hotel or motel room before they are allowed to seek other accommodations.

P.S. A group of Hawaii residents from both the Big Island and Kauai have filed a lawsuit targeting Governor David Ige and key members of his staff which challenges the lawfulness of his use of emergency proclamations throughout the pandemic. These residents are claiming in their lawsuit that the original emergency period allowed by Hawaii state law is 60 days, but Governor Ige continues to extend the emergency period, which is now set to end on July 31st. Some Hawaii residents are worried that if this pattern is allowed to continue that there will be no end in sight for the emergency rules. To read more on about the lawsuit, click here.
