Market Update
After some false starts, we now have an effective public transportation system on Maui. The Maui Bus service is operating every day including holidays. You can’t beat the price at only $2/boarding with even lower fares available by buying passes.
I personally tried it once when traveling from Kahului to Wailea, and found the air-conditioned buses to be quite comfortable. Also, they do operate in a timely manner. Click here to see all the routes and schedules. You might wish to visit the County’s website for further details.
In addition to the Maui Bus Service, there is a free transportation program provided by Maui Economic Opportunity (MEO) for Senior Citizens, persons with disabilities, and youth needing rides to certain after school programs. Visit MEO’s website to learn more about their programs.
Of course, there are several other options to get around Maui such as taxis, shuttles, and rental cars. Here is an excellent website I found that shows the names and phone numbers for those companies.
To travel between Islands, most people will fly either with one of the major carriers, or take one of the commuter airlines. You could visit Hawaiian Airlines, go! Airlines, Mokulele Airlines, Island Air, and Pacific Wings to look at their competitive rates for inter-island travel.
We did have a Super Ferry that operated between Maui and Oahu about 5 years ago, but it went out of business. If you want to go between Maui and Lanai, your best option is to use Expeditions Maui-Lanai Ferry service. For travel between Maui and Molokai, Princess Cruises operates the Maui-Molokai Ferry.

P.S. - We are extremely thankful that no one was hurt during a recent incident involving a Mokulele Airlines commuter flight that lost power and had to make an emergency landing on the Piilani Highway in Wailea last week. This one struck really close to home because the pilot. Ryan Fields, who safely landed the plane is my nephew by marriage (married to my niece). It was a miracle that no one was injured or killed. Thanks Ryan for such a remarkable job of piloting!
