A moratorium on all new transient accommodations in all zoning districts on Maui, including hotel rooms, timeshares, short-term vacation condos and rental homes. According to data from the Maui Island Plan, the daily visitor population of Maui exceeds one-third of the resident population, a ratio that benefits tourism but is unsustainable. Unchecked development in this sector adds burden to Maui’s existing county infrastructure challenges and negatively impacts the environment and residents’ quality of life. According to the new law no permit applications or permits for new transient accommodations may be accepted or granted by any board, commission or agency. This includes special management area (SMA) permits. Proposed projects at the Grand Wailea and Kihei Marketplace may seek exemption to the rule. If granted, the Wailea expansion would include 137 new units and 13 new vacation rentals at Kihei Marketplace would get green lighted. For more information check out the full article - here.
