Market Update

Maui is an incredibly popular tourist destination, and as the economy continues to remain healthy, we are likely to see even more travelers from all over the world visit the island. In 2019 Maui welcomed and entertained a staggering 3,071,596 tourists. Since the Hawaii Tourism Authority began tracking the number of tourists visiting Maui in 1990, this is the highest number ever recorded. The State of Hawaii overall saw over 10 million tourists in 2019.

While many industries on Maui are rejoicing at these high visitation numbers, long term residents are left wondering what the increased traffic will do to the island, the culture and the surrounding ocean in the long term. There were also concerns voiced by the Maui Tomorrow Foundation that the money spent by tourists visiting Hawaii is not going towards solving local infrastructure issues but rather into funding more private hotels. Unbridled tourism is a big concern all over the world, and Hawaii is no exception. If you are fortunate enough to visit Maui, be mindful of your impact, educate yourself on best practices and endeavor to leave the island better than you found it.
