| It was a repeat of last week's scene but this time people were lined up 3 days in advance of the advertised time for accepting reservations for another new housing project in Wailuku. Instead of letting the people wait three days, the developers decided to accept reservations earlier than scheduled. This, of course, sparked a debate over fairness. In the future, reservations will most likely be allocated based on a lottery system which will be much fairer than the current system. Read the full story. The year is drawing to an end, and for those of you who bought property this year or in previous years and never filed, please keep in mind that the deadline for filing for home exemptions is December 31st. The current rate for homeowners who occupy their home or condo is $3.63/thousand whereas non-owner occupants pay $4.93/thousand unless they are doing short term vacation rentals and then the rate goes up to $8.30/thousand. There is also an additional exemption for owner occupants of $50,000 which increases to $80,000 at age 60 and $100,000 at age 70. Don't assume that you get these exemptions automatically. You must apply for them and the Property Tax Office must have proof of your age before they will grant age exemptions. There are some other qualifying exemptions for disabled persons or those whose incomes are very low (circuit breaker credits).
