Now for the $64,000 question this week. How will the war in Iraq affect the Maui real estate market? This is not an easy question to answer since it depends on so many factors, such as: How long will the war last? Will the war spread to other countries such as Iran? How much it will cost for the war (someone has to pay for it and that could drive up interest rates as the government needs to attract capital to finance this rather costly endeavor)? Will there be an increase in terrorism? And many other factors.
Since our economy is so heavily dependent on tourism, there is obviously a lot of concern here in the Islands especially amongst hotel operators, restaurants, and local businesses. With the trickle down effect though, all areas of the economy will be affected if there is a long and protracted downturn in tourism. Let's hope and pray that the war is over soon for everyone's sake.
