Maui Quality Of Life Factors: Recreational Facilities

Maui is world renowned for fun outdoor activities like swimming, scuba diving, hiking, but Maui is also home to some fine recreational facilities allowing visitors and residents to take the fun indoors or out. If you would like to play some softball, maybe throw some hoops in a basketball court, get in the game on a full size soccer field, Maui has no shortage of facilities to meet your desires.

The War Memorial complex features baseball and softball fields, soccer fields, swimming, and tennis courts. Located in Wailuku, this facility even has its own stadium, if you ever wanted to feel like you’re in the big league!

The Lahaina Recreational Center, located in Lahaina, features swimming facilities for aquatics and swimming fun. Situated in a nine acre park, the facility also features ball diamonds, soccer fields, basketball courts, and a fun playground for the youngsters.

The Lahaina Civic Center, also located in Lahaina, features a full gymnasium, basketball courts, tennis courts, and even an amphitheater. A prime event location centrally located, the center is home to the annual EA Sports Maui Invitational, an NCAA-sanctioned basketball tournament.

Maui has numerous parks and recreational service programs and areas for resident and visitors of Maui. Overseen by the Maui Parks and Recreation Board, these facilities are well-maintained and provide safe, cost-effective fun for everyone. Enjoy a picnic in the park, a ball game on the diamond, and a hike through the paths of Maui’s beautiful parks.

Aquariums are always a favorite of visitors, and Maui has some of the world’s finest, including the Maui Ocean Center. See colorful marine life up close, let the kids wonder at the marvels of the sea as they swim close enough to almost touch, enjoy playful displays by the fascinating sea turtles. Digital audio guides keep you on track with what you are seeing and experiencing in this marvelous collection of the ocean waters around Maui. Cared for with integrity and released when they have grown big enough, as is the case of the turtles, the animals at the Maui Ocean Center are a world to experience for young and old.

Retirement Destination: Maui vs. Arizona

The time has come to make a decision on where to retire and spend some golden time relaxing and enjoying the leisure life. You have narrowed it down to two choices, Arizona or Maui. You love open spaces, which both Arizona and Maui will offer, but you also love the ocean and only one of the options brings that to your front and back yard. You used to enjoy long drives and camping trips, which staying on the mainland would allow, but you find yourself less keen on the idea of traveling and even less interested in sleeping in a tent anymore. Long hot dry summers were once the staple of your holidays, but now you prefer a more steady climate with no winter chill or summer inferno. Looking at the two last options for your retirement, the choice stands out: You will be retiring to Maui.

With its dormant volcanoes forming 10,000 foot high peaks for watching the sunset (and maybe see a snowfall, the only place on Maui to get snow) and deep seated valleys to enjoy hikes and explorations, Maui is a world unto itself that brings those seeking the best from life. People statistically live longer on Maui, its stress free lifestyle lending itself towards good health and well being. Whether you are whale watching in the winters or playing with the grandkids at one of the many kid-friendly lifeguard-supervised beaches, Maui is the destination of retirees who deserve the best and know where to find it. Leave behind the car-centric world of the mainland and find everything you need within walking or biking distance. World class golf courses and community events are certain to keep the active retiree busy day in and day out.

A tropical island paradise that lends itself to the person who wants the finer things out of life, Maui is a retirement destination that will open its beauty and fabulous sights to all those who come, and will quickly feel like home to those who decide to stay.

Retirement Destination: Maui vs. Florida

The decision has been made to move to a warmer climate for your retirement years. You have narrowed it down to either a new home in Maui or Florida. Both destinations feature beautiful weather and plenty of activities for retirees. So, how do you decide what state to move to and call home? Well, it all comes down to what conveniences you want compared to what the two states offer.

For starters, Maui, and Hawaii in general, is considerably less crowded than Florida. There is very little traffic to deal with in Maui and, for the most part, facilities and shopping are no further than a short walk or bicycle ride away. While the cost of fuel is more expensive than the mainland, there is little need to drive around, making the cost of fuel and transportation relative.

One of the biggest problems facing people who retire to Maui is the probability of becoming “rock happy”, where they find Maui to be the perfect place to be and realize they no longer leave to go anywhere else. Formed by two extinct volcanoes that joined in the middle, the peaks and valleys are breathtaking and the ocean and sky invigorating.

There is little in the way of cause for concerns with the weather on Maui. Where Florida has its seasonal ups and downs with the regular seasonal threat of tropical storms and hurricanes, Maui has no such annual concerns. With temperature at a near constant of “practically perfect”, Maui experiences little in the way of severe storms.

Excellent healthcare facilities that are constantly improved, such as the recent helipad addition to the Maui Memorial Medical Center, are established and ready to serve the needs of Maui’s residents. Expert specialists and general practitioners call Maui home and are available should the need arise.

While education is not nearly as important for those seeking to retire, there is the age old adage that you are never to old to learn something new, so perhaps a course or two at the Maui Community College is right up your alley.

Crime is low on the island and people respect each other, looking out for one another and helping when needed. A true sense of community thrives on Maui, making it the perfect place to consider settling for your retirement.

New Helipad at Maui Memorial Medical Center

Big changes have come to the Maui Memorial Medical Center, changes that will help patients receive the medical care they need faster. On September 22nd, the Maui Memorial Medical Center dedicated a new helipad that will allow faster transportation of patients needing medical care. Located at the west end of the Kahului hospital grounds, the helipad dedication coincides with the new MMMC Cardiac department.

As recently as one year ago, patients requiring relatively straight-forward cardiac procedures were having to go off island, according to interventional cardiologists. However, now thanks to the new acute care cardiac program, and the new helipad to bring in patients faster, Maui residents can receive top-quality cardiac care without having to leave Maui.
Maui Managing Director Keith Regan said, “I guarantee you that in at least the next two or three years, you will have a friend, or family member, or someone that you know whose life has been saved by this building right here, and the helicopter that’s going to be landing there.”

Dr. Joseph Chambers, a member of the new MMMC Cardiac Services Department, added, “We’ve treated over 10 patients in the last month with acute coronary syndromes and I think with this helipad in place we can look forward to that number growing. In five years, we can imagine a network that extends throughout eastern Hawai’i, which is an under-served area.”

MMMC CEO Wes Lo commented, “We used to average about 30 patients we flew off to Honolulu per month for cardiac related conditions. This last month, there were only seven or eight, so we’ve really made an impact on the whole delivery system in one month.”

As the only neighbor island that can treat emergency heart attacks, patients from Hana on the East end of the island have been treated already, and the MMMC will available to patients from Lana’i and Molokai, as well. By landing patients at the hospital’s helipad instead of the War Memorial Complex in Wailuku, 10-15 minutes of critical time can be shaved off patient transportation time, and those saved minutes can literally mean the difference between life and death.

Along with the new helipad and Cardiac Care Department, MMMC has also installed two new generators. After the earthquake in 2006 that left most of the island without power for several hours, MMMC installed two generators, each capable of running power to the entire hospital in the event of a power outage due to earthquake or other event. Of the generators, Managing Director Keith Regan said, “The helipad is great, and the cath-lab is as spectacular as they come, but those two new generators that we just blessed, are really an amazing thing,” adding that the “double redundancy” of the two generators “is so comforting to us.”

With the helipad, new cardiac care department and new generators, MMMC is there to provide medical care to the residents of Maui like never before!

Richard Chamberlain Sold His Maui Home for $13.8 Million

Richard Chamberlain, a longtime and decorated actor of both stage and screen, has sold his 4 bedroom, 3.5 bathroom 8764 sq ft Maui home for a reported $13.8 million. This beautiful residence overlooks Maui’s Keawakapu Beach, and is close to four world-class golf courses. The new owners will have the splendor of 1/2 acre of sprawling land to set up a seat and admire the gorgeous sunsets that silhouette the distant islands. Built with the finest of materials and custom architectural designs, this home is as unique and classy as the person for whom it was built.

With such entertainment classics as “The Thorn Birds” and “Shogun” in his list of acting accomplishments, Richard Chamberlain has long been a fan favorite in both TV and film. In the 60’s, Mr. Chamberlain was one of the hottest actors on the market, with a bevy of teenage admirers buying up his posters and putting them on their walls. Now, with Hollywood calling him back again and again to work on new projects, Richard Chamberlain, also known as the “King of the Mini-Series”, felt it was time to move back close to the work and give up the Maui homestead, a decision that could not have been an easy one.

The homestead Mr. Chamberlain chose to sell took him 4 years to complete and combines luxe minimalism with a hint of an Asian theme. With a spa and screening room as noteworthy features, the property also has a two-bedroom two-bathroom guest house. Other features worth mentioning are two master suites, a formal dining area, library, atrium, media room, and chef’s kitchen. Private and secure, the estate is mere minutes away from the Grand Wailea Resort, designer shops, as well as fabulous restaurants.

A longtime resident of Maui, Mr. Chamberlain will be keeping a place in the state, but will be living most of his time in the Los Angeles area to accommodate his busy work schedule. At 77 years old, this is one actor who does not seem to be slowing down!

Canadian Visitors: Welcome Boost To Maui Economy

Maui has always been, and will always be, a very popular destination for vacationing Canadians, but 2011 has seen it become even more popular, with an increase in July 2011 of well over 15% in the numbers of travelers from Canada when compared to July 2010. This increase offset the decrease in Japanese tourists (-18.9%), visitors from US East (-4.4%) and US West (-1.5%). While the overall numbers are down slightly for the season, Canadian tourists have brought a welcome boost to the economy with each and every plane that lands.
The year started off with a boost in the number of vacationing tourists from the US East and West, but those numbers fell off in the second half of the year. Japanese visitors slowed down slightly, and have remained down, following their horrible earthquake and tsunami catastrophe in March 2011.

Maui Homes for Sale

With the Canadian currency riding strong, Maui Visitors Bureau Executive Director Terryl Vencl said Canadians are “wonderful visitors for us.” With consumer confidence low in the US, friendly cash-laden Canadians are taking up the slack and arriving with money to spend. The Maui Visitors Bureau is “pounding the pavement, if you will, in Canada,” to keep that flow of Canadian tourists streaming into Maui.

For those curious about the actual numbers, July 2011 (213,723 visitors) totaled at 392 fewer visitors than July 2010 (214,115 visitors). This is a drop of 0.2%. However, for the first seven months of the year, the total has been an uptick of +5.6% overall, with 1.32 million this year compared to 1.25 million during the same period last year. Across the state, air travelers fell 1.9%, but it is reported that the folks arriving are staying longer (+5.3% at an average of 7.88 days) and spending more (+5.2% for a total average of $173 per person per day). While statewide arrivals were down by close to 2%, the Canadian traveler numbers jumped a whopping +28.6%, making July the 13th month of double digit growth from the Canadian tourism market.

Overall, regardless of the global economic uncertainty, Hawaii’s tourism economy continues to do well, and continued growth through the fourth quarter and into 2012 is anticipated. HTA President and Chief Executive Officer Mike McCartney said, “With continued interest in new routes to Hawaii, the HTA is working with airlines to maintain and grow airlift to our islands to meet demand.”

Determining Your Life Course

Life Vision

Last night I had the opportunity to meet with a friend with whom I grew up on Maui. This was the first time we’d seen in each other in at least 15 years. It is remarkable how people change and sometimes grow over time. This individual definitely has grown.

In grade school and intermediate school he was the class clown. He was also very clumsy and uncoordinated. I don’t think he’d mind me saying so, because last night he said so himself. In highschool our ways parted—he went to Maui High School and I went to Seabury. Our friendship seemingly disappeared overnight. Several years ago I started followed him on Facebook, that’s how I found out he is on Maui this week.

Out of the blue, I called him last night at about 7:45pm. We talked for a few minutes, and he invited me to visit with at his father’s house in Kula where he is staying. I showed up about 30 minutes later, and it was just like old times and at the same time it wasn’t.

My friend is now a father of two, a dedicated husband, a successful businessman, and an avid practicer of Jiu Jitsu. He leads a successful investment real estate brokerage in Los Angeles, California. It was intriguing to hear him talk, because this was the guy that two decades ago was the class clown. We’ll likely meet again later today or this weekend—so perhaps there will be an update to this story.

My takeaway from last night is that most people never decide what SPECIFICALLY they want, and as a result are left to pick up the crumbs of those who have decided exactly what they want and are pursuing with focused effort and persistence.

How about you? Do you know what you want? I plan to use a significant portion of this weekend refining my goals and vision for my life.

Taming the Beast

Last week everyone in the office took a break from the normal routine to go see some big wave surfing. On Wednesday, 3/30 a good-sized northwest swell began to take shape on Maui’s north and west shores. So the following morning, Greg decided he’d take his first shot at Jaws tow-in surfing.

As we drove through the deserted pineapple field toward Jaws we created a dust storm in our wake. Full speed ahead, we proceeded down the 2 mile dirt road until we finally arrived at Peahi Maui. We arrived just after 9am, Melissa Smith was already nestled away in a neat little hill-side shelter looking out towards the peak. Greg and his tow partner, Tide Rivers, had just arrived at Jaws on a jet ski.

It was a smaller day by Jaws standards—perhaps 15 to 18 feet. There were about 8 guys out. Greg and Tide were the only two towing in with a jet ski. Everyone else was surfers and paddle surfers.

We saw quite a few waves caught. I’m sure it looks a whole lot bigger from the water. From the cliff, surfers look tiny. Later on a windsurfer came out and even he looked small. So yes, it was probably a lot bigger than it looked. In total we stayed at Jaws for between an hour and an hour and a half. It was quite an educational experience. This is practically my backyard and I had never taken the time to see this freak phenomenon of nature.

Maui has so many beautiful settings and experiences to offer. Yet sometimes we get too busy and caught up with the daily hustle. What I’m saying is sometimes its imperative to slow down and enjoy what’s around you. I hope to be sharing another such experience soon.

Have a great week,

Josh Tremblay R(S)
