Top 5 Indoor Plants For Your Home

Over the last several months, many of us have been spending much more time at home. All this time indoors may have you looking around your home wondering if there are ways you can spice up the aesthetic as well as bring in more nature. Living on Maui, there is no shortage of natural beauty outside, and if you are wondering how to bring some of that beauty inside, with plants that thrive in an indoor environment, then this post is for you! Below we are going to go over some of our favorite options for indoor plants that will survive and thrive in your home even if you are new to growing and taking care of plants.

1) Snake Plant

The unusual name of this plant comes from the thin upright leaves and green banding characteristic of snake skin. This is an incredibly low maintenance plant that can survive even if you forget to water it for a few days. The ideal environment for a snake plant is in an area that gets plenty of sunlight. An added benefit to the snake plant, and all indoor plants for that matter is that it can filter chemicals and toxins from the air and manufacture oxygen.

2) Monstera

Maui residents are sure to see plenty of monstera plants out in nature, but what you may not know is that this eye-catching plant thrives indoors as well. This plant only needs to be watered every 1 - 2 weeks, and actually grows better if the soil is given time to dry out in between waterings. Indirect sunlight is perfect for the monstera, and similar to the snake plant it has been shown to be incredibly effective at filtering out airborne chemicals.

3) Philodendron

This plant produces bright green, heart shaped leaves that have trailing vines that have been known to grow all the way to the floor if they are not trimmed. The philodendron thrives if it is elevated, such as in a hanging basket or up on a shelf, as the vines will naturally want to grow downward. Pruning is easy, and the philodendron is incredibly resilient, even if it isn’t watered or neglected for a period of time.

4) Aloe Vera

Just like the monstera, this plant can be seen in abundance all over Maui. The juice from the aloe vera leaves can be used to treat sunburns, and you can even ingest it for anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial benefits. Aloe vera is super easy to grow if placed in a bright and sunny location, and it can go for long periods of time without being watered. Just like with the other house plants mentioned above, aloe vera will purify the air and reduce airborne dust particles.

5) Pothos

Similar to the philodendron, the pothos plant has attractive, bright green leaves and trailing vines. This plant will grow and look beautiful, even in an area that has low light and less than ideal conditions. Though it should be watered every week, pothos are incredibly resilient and will bounce back even if neglected for a period of time.
