The Best Holiday Activities on Maui

The holidays are a wonderful time to visit Maui, and you are sure to find every neighborhood on the island adorned with beautiful lights and decorations. Luckily, the one thing you won’t find on Maui is snow. If you are staying for the whole winter, or just coming for a couple of weeks there are plenty of holiday activities across the island to entertain you and your family.

Attend The Annual Banyan Tree Lighting

Every year, the community gathers around the massive Banyan Tree in Lahaina to see it lit up by thousands of multi-colored lights. This magical event is a favorite for locals and tourists alike to kick off the holiday season and make memories with their friends and family. This year the tree lighting will take place on December 7th and the tree will be lit nightly for the remainder of December.

Shop at Local Markets & Art Galleries

Who wouldn’t want a Christmas present sent to them from Maui? Send your family back on the mainland unique gifts this season while supporting local artists and vendors. The three hottest areas to find local goods are the Whaler’s Village in Kaanapali, the Shops at Wailea and in Makawao. You can also visit some of the pop-up outdoor markets that happen throughout the season such as the Swap Meet in Kahului and the Maui Sunday Market. Some of the unique and rare gifts you will find cannot be obtained anywhere else in the world.

Watch Santa as He Visits Maui

On Christmas eve around 9:00am make sure you are on the beach in front of the Grand Wailea Hotel to watch Santa Claus arrive via an outrigger canoe. After the landing he will be available for pictures on the lawn. If 9:00am sounds a little early, there will be a second landing with both Santa and Mrs. Claus at noon in front of the Fairmont Kea Lani on Polo Beach.

Take a Whale Watching Tour

Whale season on Maui runs from November until May and if you are trying to find an engaging activity for the whole family then this is it. Due to the whale’s winter migration down from Alaska, we can enjoy their presence in our warm Hawaiian waters for several months out of the year.
