Decrepit UHMC Dorms Undergoing Renovations

If you have driven into Wailuku via Hana Highway anytime in the last few years then you have likely seen the old and abandoned UH-Maui College dorms. The buildings were blessed on Tuesday morning to kick off a new project which will restore the buildings and provide a safe place to people who would otherwise be homeless. The new housing project is called, “Huliau” which means “turning point, time of change.”

The Maui County Council and Mayor Michael Victorino have been working hard over the last number of months to get the plans approved as well as to secure funding for the new project. When asked about the process to plan and execute the renovations, Mayor Victorino had this to say about the teamwork displayed, “Maui County Council members approved funding for the project, and UH-Maui College, led by Chancellor Lui Hokoana, helped return the property leased by the state back to the County of Maui. This project is a great example of collaboration, making great things happen with teamwork.”

The first phase of development will include the construction of 12, two-bedroom units in three of the old dorm buildings. Amongst the plans, there is also a community center with laundry facilities as well as office space for social services. Construction is expected to be completed by early next year.
